INTERVIEW | HOW OUR AFRICAN ARTISANS HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY COVID-19

INTERVIEW | HOW OUR AFRICAN ARTISANS HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY COVID-19

April 29, 2020

What challenges do people face social distancing in slums? When your shack is two meters square and shares a thin makeshift wall with the shack next door. Where raw sewage runs past your front door and there is no electricity or running water.  How are people managing in rural areas where people have space, water and air but the closest hospital is 3 hours away? Some rural areas have imposed curfews, guarded by military force, making it almost impossible to tend to your crops, key for the survival of subsistence farmers.

SUSTAINABILITY | OUR FAVOURITE ETHICAL CLOTHING BRANDS

SUSTAINABILITY | OUR FAVOURITE ETHICAL CLOTHING BRANDS

April 25, 2020

It is no secret to anyone that knows the Artisans & Adventurers team that we love brightly coloured clothes. However, the fashion industry is one of the most environmentally damaging industries that exists as well as often being one the most unethical. Around 150 billion garments are produced annually, leading to more pollution and landfill waste than ever before. It takes 2720 litres of water to make a single t-shirt, the same amount of water most of us will usually drink over a 3 year period. It is also estimated that up to 95% of landfilled textiles are actually recyclable. Not only is the impact on our planet huge, garment workers are also at the 2nd highest risk of modern slavery of all workers worldwide. In fact, a recent study of workers in India’s garment industry found that 99.2% of workers were subject to conditions of forced labour. That’s why it is so important to us to support small, ethical businesses with sustainable practises that align with our own ethics, both as a business and as individuals. There are some incredible businesses out there that produce their clothes ethically and in an environmentally friendly way and so we wanted to share some of our personal favourites with you to help you get started on your ethical clothing journey.

SUSTAINABILITY | OUR GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN

SUSTAINABILITY | OUR GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN

April 22, 2020

Here at Artisans & Adventurers, sustainable and ethical design is at the core of what we do. As a sustainable business, we always try our best to be as transparent as possible, especially concerning our supply chain. We work with small-scale artisans and craft groups who have limited access to international markets. Getting to know all of our artisans personally and spending a long time forging friendships and working relationships together. The nature of the global supply chain means our decisions as designers and consumers affect people all around the world, so we strive to create products which bring as much joy to their creator as they do to our end customer. We wanted to take this time to explain how Artisans & Adventurers products come to be, from the design process, meeting our artisans, to the final product you see in our stores and online.

If you've visited one of our stores or even our website, you've probably noticed just how much we love our Kenyan baskets. Not only is every single basket completely individual, they're sustainably handmade using traditional hand weaving techniques by groups of talented women-weavers living in rural Kenya. Our baskets come in a huge range of colours, designs and sizes so there really is the perfect basket for everyone. We know that sometimes shopping online makes it difficult to get a good feel for the size of the baskets. That’s why we’ve introduced our new Kenyan Basket visual size guide that you will find on every basket listing to help give you an idea of each basket's dimensions compared with the other sizes. We also often get customers telling us they love our baskets but they just don’t know what to do with them. Fear not! We truly think that there is a basket for absolutely everything, so  we've put together a handy guide on the perfect size basket for every job.

LIFESTYLE | HOW TO SUPPORT INDEPENDENT STORES DURING COVID-19

March 25, 2020

We know there’s a lot going on at the moment and everyone feels a little lost in all the uncertainty. With the situation and guidance changing every day, we - as a small business - have a lot to think about, including how we can continue to provide our services for our customers and our artisans.

As a sustainable business, we try our best to be as transparent as possible, especially concerning our supply chain. We know all of our artisans personally and have spent a long time forging friendships and working relationships together. Many of our small scale producers rely on our trade as their main source of income, shopping small has a direct impact on these communities. The same can be said for all small businesses, buying their products or using their services has a direct impact on the owners, their families and the groups of people that they work with.
