Community| Meet Margate Pilates

We’ve recently welcomed Margate Pilates Studio into our King Street store, with both mat work and apparatus classes being held throughout the week.

Margate Pilates co-founders, Neil and Cat (pictured) met back in 2006 when Cat started going to Pilates classes at her local Gym, taught by Neil. Both ended up moving to Margate four years ago and having met up as local Pilates teachers trying to start up classes realised their paths had once again crossed!

After four years travelling back and forth to London, both Cat and Neil have become established teachers in Margate. Tired of the commuting, the duo decided the time had come to combine forces and open their fully equipped studio above Artisans & Adventurers.

Soapstone is a beautifully tactile material with an appearance similar to that of marble, it is a metamorphic rock that is composed primarily of talc. Because it is composed primarily of talc it is usually very soft. Soapstone is typically grey, blue-ish, green, or brown in colour and is often variegated. Its name is derived from its "soapy" feel and softness. Because of its softness, soapstone is easy to carve into all different shapes and designs. It is also non-porous and heat-resistant, making it a great material for a wide range of uses. All of our contemporary soapstone products are hand carved in Nairobi by Tabaka Chigware Youths Self Help Group.

One of our favourite places to adventure to and work within is undoubtedly Kenya. Kenya is located in East Africa and has coastline along the Indian Ocean. The Kenyan capital, and largest city, is Nairobi and the country has a population of approximately 51 million. Kenya has a varied climate; it is tropical on the coastline, cooler in the savannah grasslands and features permanent snow on its tallest peaks. Agriculture is the predominant industry and employs 75% of the workforce. Typically, Kenyan cuisine features very few processed foods and instead mainly consists of inexpensive but filling foods ...
